Summary

Summary

It's Halloween night. The city is quiet. The city is still. But as the lights go down, the music comes up - and the guests start to arrive at the hip-hop Halloween ball! And oh, what a party it is. Told in hip-hop rhyming text, L'il Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, Tom Thumb, and all of their fairy-tale friends come together for a rapping, stomping, shaking Halloween romp. Scoo-bee-doo-bee-doo-wah. Yeah!

Author Notes

At the age of nineteen, Mike Reed won a piano competition and was chosen to play Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.1 with the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra. Currently a freelance illustrator, he lives in Minnesota.

Booklist Review

Ages 3^-7. Halloween is a good night to fracture all those fairy tale characters. In this rhythmic, joyful picture book, cool, contemporary Cinderella, Rapunzel, Tom Thumb, and other storybook creatures in sneakers and shades "shake, shake dem bones" and party together. In Reed's glowing oil paintings, monsters shine everywhere in the dark, the radiator grows legs and arms, eyes gleam in an open drawer, and teeth shine in the letter slot. Li'l Red dances with Jack, who has a cow to sell. Goldilocks with seven bright braids is twirling those bears ("No wonder she busted their rockin' chairs"). Tom Thumb is fine in baggy jeans and baseball cap on backward ("For a tiny little guy, he can shake it on home"). Like Hamanaka's Hokey Pokey [BKL F 1 97], this is a book for group sharing and joining in. Children will sing and dance and chant the refrain as they shake their bones with the hip-hop rhyming words and the swirling pictures. --Hazel Rochman
