Publisher's Weekly Review

Like a British Goodfellas in its sharp-edged tone, James's ( Halo Parade ) police procedural marks the welcome return of Det. Supt. Colin Harpur. Harpur has long tried to put away Bernard ``Tenderness'' Mellick, a mobster whose dilemma here might provide the opportunity. Mellick has recently taught a ``lesson'' to competitor Ivor Wright with a blowtorch applied to a sensitive part of his anatomy. In retaliation, Wright's goons have kidnapped Mellick's retarded 11-year-old son, Graham. A botched confrontation in the hospital leads to Wright's death and a drastically increased ransom demand for Graham. Harpur links Wright's demise to rumors of Graham's abduction and quietly begins his own search for the boy. Meanwhile, retired police detective Hubert Scott offers Harpur a deal: in return for defending him in a pending police inquiry, Scott will set up Mellick in a ransom-raising bank heist. Harpur's quandary centers around the safety of the youth, who will likely be killed if the ransom is not delivered. A strong resolution crowns this crisply written, psychologically astute novel, which is distinguished by ear-perfect underworld dialogue and the plausibility with which James conveys his characters' double-dealing relationships.
