Booklist Review

Manousos and Tilden have logged a lot of years in the relatively new field of desktop publishing, from its tentative beginnings to today's option-loaded capabilities and often bewildering choices. They've written (and produced on a desktop publishing system) a solid overview for those who have delved into desktop publishing far enough to formulate detailed questions. The authors explain the hardware (scanners and printers), software (including PostScript), and the role of service bureaus. The creation of various documents is analyzed from planning, writing, and efficient inputting to editing and designing. They cover evaluating and choosing typefaces and working with art and photographs. Various chapters are dedicated to the production of specific types of publications. Happily, the authors don't abandon their readers at the camera-ready stage; they also cover the mechanics of pasteup, working with color, and printing. A list of suppliers and an index round out this encouraging, accessible guide. ~--Donna Seaman
