School Library Journal Review

PreS - Gr 4-- A well-designed and well-organized photographic essay. Labrador retriever Saffy is shown changing shape as her pregnancy advances and as she gets ready to give birth. Nine puppies are born as her child owners (and readers) look on. Clear, crisp full-color photographs of the dog family growing and discovering the world are enchanting. The children in the story watch the development of the dogs' personalities and instincts, and sadly say goodbye when the animals leave for new homes. While the text is sometimes a bit dry, the pictures and clever layout are truly charming. This title complements Cole's My Puppy Is Born (Morrow, 1991), the Fischer-Nagels' A Puppy Is Born (Putnam, 1985), Selsam's How Puppies Grow (Scholastic, 1990), and Hess's Life Begins for Puppies (Scribners, 1978; o.p.). Its outstanding full-color photographs merit its place on any library shelf. For animal lovers, there can never be too many books that - tell a visual story such as this one.--Carol Kolb Phillips, The Library, East Brunswick, NJ (c) Copyright 2010.
