Booklist Review

When is Isabella Rossellini's birthday? What happened in history on June 25? This volume lists birthdays and events for every day of the year. Some 2,000 entries are new to this edition.

Library Journal Review

This update of the 1990 edition (LJ 2/1/91) includes an additional 2000 entries, bringing the total to 17,000. The reprinted preface describes the work's organization, criteria for inclusion, handling of date discrepancies, and types of sources used. Also reprinted is the fascinating essay on the Gregorian calendar, its predecessors, and adjustments that have been made in response to astronomical considerations, sacred holidays, superstitions, and politics. Those featured in each day's "Birthdays" section are primarily figures from European and American history, sports, and the arts, and a one-sentence description of each person's claim to fame is included. The "Events" section lists ten to 20 historical events per day, most from U.S. history. There is an index of surnames but not of events or subjects. Other comparable resources are Holidays & Anniversaries (Gale, 1999), with 26,000 entries, and the History Channel web site's "This Day in History" (www.historychannel.com/today). Kid Info gives links to several more online birthday/event sites at www.kidinfo.com/references/calendars.html. Though several of these sources contain a little more information about their subjects, this volume is recommended as one of the several print and online calendar sources all reference collections should provide. Choice Review

The purpose of From Day to Day is to list birthdays of historic figures and historical events for each day of the year. This edition updates the first (1990). The work is divided into 15 sections: a preface, "The Calendar," a section for each month, and an index. According to the preface, this new edition has almost 17,000 entries compared to the first edition's 15,000. "The Calendar" looks in great detail at the evolution of the Western calendar but ignores other calendars such as the Mayan. Each month section includes a history of how the month was named, related items of interest, and day by day coverage of birthdays and historical events. This work has many problems. There no indication as to what years are covered. The entries have a European and American bias. No historical events or birthdays are listed for early non-European cultures until they have contact with Western civilization. While there are entries for Mohammed, there are none for Buddha. Entries for Jesus are numerous. Searching the Internet for "historical events" produces many resources that present a more balanced view. Not recommended for any library because of its Eurocentric focus. W. E. Drew Jr. SUNY Agricultural and Technical College at Morrisville
