Booklist Review

Straight talk and sound advice characterize this impressive self-help guide for the Latin woman (Latina). According to the author, the Latina is trapped in a culture that views the worth of a woman for the most part by her abilities to reproduce and to provide service to the male. Faced with limited opportunities for advancement other than marriage and a family, the Latina finds herself in a cycle of demoralization, repression, and exploitation. The author encourages women to "de-victimize" themselves, to take advantage of the many opportunities available to them. Education is key to a better life. It empowers women with the necessary resources to take charge of their lives and to make freer, more independent choices. The author's personal concern for the welfare of the Latina is made clear. Highly recommended. Includes a bibliography and a chart, "Mastering My Future," that allows a woman to sketch out her goals and priorities in life; to be indexed. --Jane Jurgens
