Booklist Review

Quinn encourages hobbyists to catch, observe, and release fish found in their local waterways, so that, armed with traps, nets, and buckets--or more exotic equipment such as seines, catch floats, and slurp guns--they can experience the thrill of live catch while stocking their aquariums. Of course, he also discusses aquarium set-up and maintenance, accessories for both fresh- and saltwater tanks, fish care, and compliance with conservation and wildlife laws. But mostly, he dedicates the text to a generous selection of fish presented in taxonomic order and a format that includes symbols to designate feeding preferences, light exposure, temperament, and habitat requirements. Small maps designate each species' range; field markings are detailed for easy identification; and line drawings illustrate. ~--George Hampton
