Booklist Review

Gr. 6-8. This volume, with its historical perspective and stunning facts, grabs the reader. Focusing on marijuana, cocaine, and heroin, Stewart follows the products from the fields (mostly in Third World countries in South America and Asia) through the refinement process. Her discussion of the international distribution system reveals a bleak but realistic portrait of a worldwide problem. Readers will be startled by the facts as they learn about the money angle, with vast proceeds being weighed rather than counted--one million dollars in 20-dollar bills weighs exactly 107.4 pounds--and the laundering techniques. Although William Bennett is no longer the drug czar, the balanced text is otherwise up-to-date. Frequent black-and-white photos (most of reasonable quality) with captions are a plus. Like other books in the Overview series, this volume is an excellent resource. Glossary; bibliographies. ~--Deborah Abbott
