Booklist Review

Terres, former editor of Audubon and author of Audubon Encyclopedia of North American Birds (1980), as well as other books about appreciating nature, has put his lifelong interest to good use by compiling a selection of memorable quotes from works by scientists, naturalists, philosophers, and poets. Writers include those you might expect such as Edward Abbey, John Burroughs, Annie Dillard, Loren Eiseley, John Muir, and Henry David Thoreau, as well more surprising, imaginative figures such as William Blake, Shakespeare, Aristotle, Anthony Burgess, Konrad Lorenz, and Voltaire. Terres offers a descriptive title for each quote--e.g., "Strange Lure of the Desert" or "Birds and Dead Trees"--and provides a subject directory and index. A delightful and useful resource. ~--Donna Seaman
