Booklist Review

General Nelson A. Miles entered the army as a volunteer in the Civil War, rose to the rank of major general by the end of the conflict, and afterward had a distinguished career in the Indian Wars, the Philippine insurrection, and as commanding general of the U.S. Army. In a portrait that is well balanced--albeit rendered in somewhat pedestrian prose--Miles is depicted as both a gifted soldier and a difficult and ambitious subordinate. This is not prime biography, but it is the only recent study of one of the great unsung American military figures. As such, it deserves a place in larger collections. Index. --Roland Green
