Booklist Review

The past 15 years or so have seen fundamental, far-reaching changes in our perceptions, attitudes, and expectations about photography. Grundberg has been monitoring this process with considerable range, vigor, and intelligence. Compiled here are more than 40 short essays and reviews detailing in jigsaw-puzzle-like pieces the medium's spreading relationship to much wider and more abstract issues than in the mid-1970s. Parceled into six topical groupings, they reflect the broadening of discourse on photography as they address a dizzying, juicy array of topics and conjectures dating from the Pre-Raphaelite to the post-Disney period. Grundberg offers an important perspective on an era that has seen a major restructuring of photographic issues and values. Notes; bibliography; to be indexed. --John Alderson
