Booklist Review

Reynolds presents an ultra-pragmatic approach to "reality" by weaving together two psychotherapies--based upon Zen Buddhist and Jodo Shinshu Buddhist psychologies--into a system that, being based on psychology rather than religious philosophy, can be practiced by a person of any or no religious preference. Called "constructive living," it is a method that facilitates coming face-to-face with the "real" person and accepting what is. Only then, according to the system, is any realistic action possible, for "trying to subdue a wave by striking it only results in a thousand waves." Although Reynolds gives a thorough account of the system and its applications in daily life, his is not a self-help book, for the method is best undertaken with the help of a guide or teacher. Those looking for inspirational aid may not find the book or method to their liking. But those seeking sound, practical advice on facing themselves and daily life will. To be indexed. --Jerry Alber
