Booklist Review

Gr. 4-6. Spotlighting astronauts and their historic flights, this full-color First Book takes the reader inside NASA and examines the personal characteristics required to become an astronaut, stressing the amount of training and education candidates receive before going into space. Chapters cover basic and advanced training, flight-specific training, mock-up and simulator exercises, and escape and survival drills. An interesting section on how space suits are custom-made explains the considerable expense and justifies the narrow height and weight limits imposed on applicants. Throughout, the space program is written about in a positive light with hardly a mention of the Challenger catastrophe. Appendix; bibliography. ~--Kathryn LaBarbera
