Booklist Review

Delightfully humorous line drawings accent this accessible selection and training manual. Although specifically aimed at persons interested in choosing a puppy from an animal shelter, this breezily written guide is useful for all potential owners, regardless of where they obtain their new pets. A puppy evaluation test helps prospective owners "evaluate the potential of any given puppy to become a good pet." Following this evaluative procedure, helpful training and maintenance suggestions are presented, including introducing a collar and leash, feeding, housebreaking, and obedience training. Dog lover Benjamin emphasizes the importance of raising a puppy to become a well-trained, well-mannered adult dog who receives plenty of love from its caring owner. No index. --Sue-Ellen Beauregard
