Choice Review

As originally published in 1835, Fanny Kemble's journal of her tour as an actress with her father in America in 1832-34 substituted dashes for most names. Columbia University owns a copy (long known to scholars) with the persons identified by the author. That copy has been used in this edition, described on the dust jacket as the "original, completely unexpurgated version." The claim is lamentably untrue, as there are numerous deletions ranging from entire daily entries to sentences and phrases. The punctuation and paragraphing of the original are routinely disregarded, and the errors--typographical and otherwise--are frequent. The only gloss is an endnote listing a handful out of the many names and titles alluded to, while the skimpy index and the bibliography are riddled with errors. Even the best feature, Elizabeth Fox-Genovese's foreword, in which she assesses the picture Fanny paints of "herself as the embodiment of the English gentlewoman," would have benefited from awareness of the author's revealing preface to the English edition. No one can regret making available the exuberant prose and often ruthless depiction of America by this remarkable woman, but it is a pity that the editor, herself an actress/author, did not produce a reliable, annotated text. Of indisputable interest to the general reader, but not suitable for scholarly use. -J. Ellis, Mount Holyoke College
