Booklist Review

Gr. 6-8. Two new additions to the Places and Peoples of the World series survey Brazil and the Netherlands. The smooth texts cover each nation's geography, history, culture, economic system, and relations with other nations, while black-and-white photographs (with a color inset at the center), are featured throughout. Glossaries are appended, and a map and a Facts at a Glance section precede each text. In Brazil, Bender brings the problems of this developing nation to center stage: the rain forests, the great poverty and hunger, and the serious economic problems are all discussed. The Netherlands presents a considerably brighter picture. Ozer's text describes that country's fundamental relationship with the sea, the relative comfort of its people (the Netherlands has one of the most extensive social welfare systems in the world), and the high education levels. Serviceable titles. --Denise Wilms
