The stated purpose of this three-volume reference tool is to "consolidate information on native plants and animals that have been placed on the list of threatened and endangered species. . . ." Volume 1 covers plants and mammals; Volume 2 covers birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, mussels, crustaceans, snails, insects, and arachnids; Volume 3 is titled Endangered Species Photo Locator. Volumes 1 and 2 contain editor's introduction, suggestions for further research, ready reference list (alphabetical listing by type of organism and common name), main species entry, state-by-state occurrence, glossary of terms, and the main index. Each main species entry contains the present status of the species, date added to list, habitat, detailed description of the organism as well as behavioral and other characteristics where appropriate. Current conservation efforts are also described. Each entry ends with a bibliography and a contact for more information. The main index contains no cross-references, nor are any needed for items are indexed by family name, common name, scientific name, and general categories such as "bear" or "cactus." Volume 3, the Endangered Species Photo Locator, is a unique tool for locating photographs of endangered species. It includes instruction on its use, species lists by type of organism, list of photographers and photo sources, and indexes of scientific and common names. Appropriate for all libraries where there is any interest in endangered species. Useful to all levels of academic users. An exceptional work. W. E.
