Summary

Summary

A selective, annotated guide to reference sources essential to the study of British literature, literature of the US, other literatures in English, and related topics--describing, and in most instances evaluating, important bibliographies, abstracts, surveys of research, indexes, databases, catalogs, general histories and surveys, annals, chronologies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and handbooks. Major journals and background studies are listed without evaluation. This revised edition adds reference tools that appeared after February 1989 and deletes discussion of superceded works. It includes 1,194 entries, refers to an additional 1,248 books and articles in annotations and headnotes, and cites 745 reviews. Paper edition (unseen), 19.50. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Summary

This work is intended to replace (not revise) Margaret Patterson's Literary research guide, second edition (MLA, 1984). The audience is narrowed here to researchers pursuing a topic at more than elementary level and entries are deleted for superseded works. Cloth edition (unseen), $35. Annotation(c) 2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Reviews 2

Choice Review

The first edition of this work was reviewed favorably in these pages (CH, Nov'90). For this revision, the editor has added reference titles published since 1989 (the first edition's cutoff date), and says he has revised half the entries, of which this edition has nearly 1,200. (The Choice review of the first edition credited it with 6,630 entries, but they are not consecutively numbered.) The compiler continues the very full descriptions of individual titles (including publishing histories), numerous cross-references, and citations to reviews. His work can fairly claim to be the standard guide in the field. R. Balay; Choice
