Booklist Review

Sensitivity is the watchword for this self-help guide. Napier's approach is inventive as well as supportive, providing an appealing balance of insight, compassion, and clinical experience that offers valuable learning for adults with a troubled past. Using Ericksonian psychology, different responses to stress are conceptually treated as separate parts of the person, thus enabling painful memories to be addressed via self-hypnosis. Other constructive concepts include construction of a "future self"-- to help defuse stressful memories and move ahead--and protective intervention within trance conditions. Napier's instruction for doing self-hynosis is precise and thorough, but it's her sensitive understanding that will attract readers. Notes and reading list. --Virginia Dwyer
