Booklist Review

Gr. 4-8. This new title in the Armed Services series is a brisk, well-organized, and solid overview that charts the army's development from the days of the colonial militia to the 1989 action in Panama. It also provides basic facts on enlistment, educational benefits, basic training, officer candidacy, and specialized training, including brief background on the jobs and responsibilities of men and women who serve, as well as discussion of the army's organization--the various commands, branches, and administrative units. Illustrated with both full-color and black-and-white photographs, Moran's text offers current information on the challenges and responsibilities of army service. ~--Linda Callaghan

School Library Journal Review

Gr 6-9 --Military enthusiasts will find these titles to be just the ticket. Attractive covers will lure potential readers in to learn of the varied aspects of both the army and the navy. In each book, a brief introduction gives way to a detailed history of that branch of the service, followed by descriptions of organization, enlistment requirements, benefits, officer training, and educational and career opportunities. The well-written, smooth texts are accompanied by both full-color and black-and-white photos. --Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS (c) Copyright 2010.
