Some 18 years in preparation, Pollin's 1,600-entry international catalog covers books, magazine articles, and artworks. All entries include bibliographic information and name the illustrator; Pollin comments on the style and content of the images he viewed and provides a location for rare items. Abbreviated symbols link the geographically arranged entries with the Poe stories and poems illustrated. Although the catalog contains only 12 plates, Pollin often provides citations to images reproduced elsewhere. Supplementary material includes an introductory survey of Poe illustration, an illustrator's list with biographical sources, and a filmography (which includes many "purloined" Poe images found in films otherwise unconnected with Poe). Sadly, these extras, the redundancy, and the decision to split the explanatory material (half in front, half in the appendixes) clutter an otherwise valuable work. This scholars' tool will be useful to upper-level and graduate researchers in art and literature, and Poe bibliographers, and rare books and popular culture collections. Recommended for university libraries. -M. M. Doherty, University of South Florida
