Library Journal Review

This comprehensive, up-to-date guide is intended for beginning rock climbers who want to learn about the sport and acquire the necessary gear. (General mountaineering and ice climbing are excluded.) Gerrard, a relative newcomer to climbing, is very enthusiastic; his illustrations and descriptions reflect his interest. Sixty of the 369 pages discuss the basics of climbing. This won't replace Royal Robbins's classic Basic Rockcraft (La Siesta Pr., 1970), but it complements the rest of the text. Among the other helpful material: addresses of equipment manufacturers, mail order outlets, and climbing magazines; a good glossary/index. Recommended for most undergraduate collections and for larger public library collections.-- Thomas K. Fry, UCLA Libs. (c) Copyright 2010.
