Booklist Review

Ages 2-7. "Baby Beluga," the title song of one of beloved children's performer Raffi's popular albums, adapts swimmingly to the format of the well-received Songs to Read series [BKL Je 1 89]. Wolff's striking double-page spreads show the young whale among its fellow Arctic Sea inhabitants. Diversifying her views, the illustrator eyes Baby Beluga and mother swimming together underwater; takes an aerial angle, looking down on the whales from a puffin's perspective; and observes the icy yet welcoming formations where seals, polar bears, and an Eskimo find shelter. Floating on the waves or up in the sky are the happy lyrics to the song about the "little white whale on the go." An inviting approach to reading encouragement. ~--Ellen Mandel

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 2-- The song about this small, white whale has as its hero probably the best loved of all Raffi's creations. Children who are learning about the interdependence of all life on Earth, and of the crucial importance of preserving the fragile environment, will get a first, cheerful lesson about the natural world by becoming acquainted with enchanting Baby Beluga, swimming wild and free with his mother in the deep blue sea. He and his friends are somewhat anthropomorphic, in the interests of cuddliness, but this does the message no harm . The illustrations are a joy to behold, and the song has a rhythm and rhyme that make it easy to remember and sing. --Joan McGrath, Education Centre Library, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (c) Copyright 2010.
