Booklist Review

Gr. 4-8. Taking his readers on a walk through Arlington National Cemetery, Ashabranner deftly weaves factual information on the cemetery's history and operations, providing vignettes about the people buried there as well as personal anecdotes from visitors, staff, and members of the military honor guard. The cemetery's rich history is plumbed to describe the establishment of a tomb for unknown soldiers, the procedures followed in a full military honors ceremony, the establishment of Memorial Day, and the training and duties of the soldiers who serve at the cemetery. His daughter's well-placed, evocative black-and-white photo~graphs enhance his descriptive, personal style, creating a powerful feeling of immediacy and inviting the reader to accompany him in honoring both the known and the unknown dead. ~--Linda Callaghan
