Choice Review

This book is a collection of 34 physics-related entries from the 15-volume Encyclopedia of Physical Science and Technology (1987) and its 1989 and 1990 yearbooks. Despite the title the emphasis is on the side of applied physics. All entries are written by leading practitioners in their respective fields. A typical entry provides a glossary of important terms, a general introduction and historical overview, and a 20 to 40 page treatment ending in a bibliography. Many helpful illustrations and photographs are used throughout and important data are presented in a tabular format. Most entries presuppose a basic knowledge of calculus, chemistry, and physics, though the introductory sections are accessible to the uninitiated. A 24-page index provides good subject access. It is unfortunate that the glossaries preceding each entry were not collected into a master list, which would increase the encyclopedia's reference utility.
