Booklist Review

Lavishly illustrated with beautifully reproduced color photographs, this handsome volume covers the nation of Spain, looking both at broad vistas and exquisite details. It leads off by depicting the landscapes, labeling Spain a land of contrasts, from the central tableland, "where the light dazzles and horizons seem boundless," to the north, "with its verdant fields and gentle contours," and the south, "with its olive groves and whitewashed villages." It scrutinizes everything from the decorative arts to architecture, showing the diversity of cultural influences--Roman, Moorish, the Habsburg and Bourbon monarchies--and how the environment in a country of warm weather and brilliant light has made patios, gardens, and terraces an extension of the home. The concluding chapter examines the turn-of-the-century Modernismo movement (perhaps best exemplified by the work of architect Antoni Gaudi i Cornet), which continues to stimulate Spanish artists today. A treat for travelers returned from Spain and an inspiration for those planning to go. Index. ~--Sally Estes
