School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up--This is the type of book that a parent is apt to pick up and try to foist on a reluctant teenager. However, it's hard to imagine anyone reading it, under whatever circumstances, and not be excited by the possibilities it presents. Henderson looks at the hows and whys of volunteer jobs and discusses at some length the available opportunities along with accounts of individual teens who have had experience in these areas. She divides the book into types of volunteer projects such as peer support, animals, health and hunger, and several others. Each section includes organizations to contact for more information. These contacts, and the information as a whole, are general enough to make the book useful for a while--specific volunteer opportunities are not emphasized. The one negative note is the poor quality photographs that do little to augment the text. An excellent introduction to the world of adult work and responsibilities, but to its credit, this aspect ofvolunteer work is mentioned but never stressed.--Trish Ebbatson, Delaware County District Library, OH (c) Copyright 2010.
