Booklist Review

Gr. 5-9. This entertaining and readable collection of animal stories is divided into three main sections: "Psychic Animals," "Altruistic Animals," and "Intelligent Animals." In each part, the author interweaves myth, legend, fiction, and scientific theory with contemporary stories she has collected from across the U.S. about extraordinary pets and farm animals. Each story, related in an anecdotal, conversational tone, is impressively documented in chapter notes; an extensive bibliography appended.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 6-8-- A collection of true stories sent to Alday by pet owners form the framework for this book. Stories include the familiar return of pets from long distances, those who ``predict'' natural disasters , and those who seem to communicate by human speech. Pets rescue small children, warn their owners of danger, show evidence of grieving , and use clever methods to reach off-limit areas. Most of these stories are about dogs and cats; a few horses and birds are included. The anecdotes are woven into a text that includes scientific observations and the role of animals in legend and history. Poems by Kipling and quotes about animals from various sources provide some continuity in chapters that are grouped into three sections: psychic animals, altruistic animals, and intelligent animals. Animal lovers who enjoy sharing the adventures and individual qualities of their pets may find something in common with these Devoted Friends . --Diane Nunn, Richard E.
