Booklist Review

Glossy stock and excellent reproductions, effectively placed throughout, endow this collective biography of 15 celebrated British book illustrators with the look and feel of an art book. That's thanks largely to designer-writer Martin, who not only wrote the narrative, but also laid out the text and illustrations. Including personal background on each illustrator as well as excerpts from interviews and correspondence with them, he gives shape to the people behind the pictures. Adults familiar with children's picture books will know the the work of the artists he showcases: they'll recognize Charles Keeping's moody, fluid illustrations, the surrealistic work of Anthony Browne, and the clean, simple shapes of Jan Pienkowski. Add to the art Martin's astute perspectives on style and creative philosophy and the text becomes as revealing as it is a pleasure to peruse. A lengthy bibliography accompanies each artist profile and an extensive general bibliography appended to the whole will lead interested readers to other significant illustrators (mostly British) and information about book illustration. Index. ~--Stephanie Zvirin
