Booklist Review

Ages 4-6. A blond-haired boy holds his new puppy, Pumpkin. Though the tiny Border collie is not yet ready to leave his mother, the boy spins a web of wonderful stories as he tells Pumpkin what they will do when she's older. The lyrical text takes them on a stroll through the meadow down to the sea, to the barn to say hello to the farm animals, and into the reeds to look for ducks. Wolff's usual woodcuts are not in evidence here. Instead, springtime watercolors capture moods that alternate between ebullient and tranquil. Besides its endearing qualities, this is a story that will help young ones understand the concept--and the promise--of the future. --Ilene Cooper

Publisher's Weekly Review

Wolff's picture books always deliver far more than one might expect from their simple concepts; her newest work is no exception. The title page depicts an appealing border collie, sure to elicit instant affection from children and parents alike. On the next spread a boy sits on a porch, looking sad and lonely. Then, while holding the tiny puppy in his arms, the boy anticipates an end to loneliness, describing everything he and the puppy will do together once she's big enough to ``come with me.'' Beautiful watercolors depicting the California bay where the boy lives turn this simple story into a visual delight. Unpretentious and compassionate, Come with Me is a perfect laptime book. Ages 3-7. School Library Journal Review

K-Gr 2-- A small boy choosing a puppy anticipates all of the classic boy-and-dog activites they'll share when the puppy is big enough to come home with him. Double-page watercolors in a wide but misted palette, with soft contours and no harsh lines, perfectly suit the quietly joyful mood of innocent love, showing details of their prospective adventures together in meadow and seaside, appealing to all of the senses. Words and pictures present the California coastal setting and the boy's rehearsal of this important childhood relationship with a romantic affection that stops short of cloying. A book that's well-suited for both read-aloud and one-on-one sharing. --Karen Litton, London Public Libraries, Ontario, Canada (c) Copyright 2010.
