Booklist Review

Beds and borders, Murphy says, are the heart and soul of the garden; she then proceeds to inform gardeners on how to create and maintain them. Murphy divides her book into three chapters. The first presents information on practical planning, formal and informal styles, edging materials, the importance of color, and planting by height. The second covers more in-depth issues, such as borders along ponds, beds consisting of vegetables and fruits, beds and borders for small city lots, and terraced beds. Finally, chapter 3 offers tidbits on 60 flowering perennials and bulbs recommended for beds and borders in most parts of the U.S. and Canada. The advice is enhanced by numerous color photographs.
