Booklist Review

This stirring, large-format book gathers a wealth of photo~graphs about the global conflict of 1939-45, drawn not only from the pages of Life magazine but also from archives in former Allied and Axis nations. The dramatic and not infrequently grisly photographs are arranged into chapters according to year. Each chapter is introduced by a short essay narrating major events the photos then document. And each chapter, in addition to following what was happening on the front lines, turns to the home front to see what was going on back here concurrently. Not to be enjoyed, of course, but to be informed and moved by. ~--Brad Hooper
