Breemer (US Navy Postgraduate School, Monterey, California) specializes in Soviet naval affairs. This volume fills a much needed role in studying the history, operational use, doctrine, and technology of the Russian undersea forces. From crude beginnings in the czarist era, the Soviet force reached 200 submarines by the 1930s, the world's largest, and has not been below that figure since. New technologies--surface and submerged launched missiles, nuclear power, and the revolution in silencing--are carefully analyzed: the comparison with other expert opinion is particularly valuable. Concise and well written in nontechnical language, this volume stands alone in its field. Superior printing and binding; timely appendixes on Soviet submarine accidents, foreign sales, and worldwide basing. Highly recommended for undergraduate, graduate students, and general readers. -P. R. Schratz, Naval War College (U.S.)
