Booklist Review

An engineer who leaves the ossifying routine of family life in Hamburg to construct a paper factory in a banana republic loses not only his veneer of civilization, but, as it was called half a century ago, his "self" as well. Pervaded by ineffable menace and plausible surrealism (who knows where realism ends in Paraguay?), he traverses the rain forest in search of the beautiful Indian teacher who may be a guerrilla. He compromises his morality and professional ethics, is brutalized, and, in a country whose language and ways are a mystery to him, accedes to that somewhat mystical and nobly deranged state of consciousness that beckoned existentialists like Sartre. (And should, by all rights, be dated by now.) In Timm's prizewinning, just-the-facts-ma'am prose, this tale begs to be read at one sitting. --Roland Wulbert
