Booklist Review

The story has a familiar ring to it. A teenage son who was once a good student and loving family member suddenly exhibits abusive, erratic, disruptive behavior. The parents are totally stymied over their son's demeanor and seek to rectify the situation by changing his school and seeking psychiatric help. In this riveting account of her family's turmoil, Sherman reveals that the real culprit was drugs. While the busy executive father continued to deny the severity of the drug problem, the author joined family support groups. At times physically fearing for her life due to 16-year-old Josh's outbursts, Sherman eventually distanced herself from the situation before finally finding the strength to place Josh in a drug rehabilitation program. An especially meaningful recollection for other parents facing similar situations, this heartfelt memoir should find a ready public library audience. No index. --Sue-Ellen Beauregard
