Booklist Review

Gr. 4-10. For young fans, here's a lively, conversational book introducing the history and idiosyncrasies of baseball. In a one-sided conversation, Alvarez gives cogent answers, from one-half to two pages in length, to a series of questions. Superlatives abound: "Who was the best pitcher? The oldest player? The greatest home run hitter?" "What was the greatest team? The prettiest ballpark? The worst blunder?" The author also answers queries such as "Why do ballplayers wear those funny socks?" "Has there ever been a woman in the big leagues?" and "Why don't they use aluminum bats in the big leagues?" Winning elements in Alvarez's writing style are his willingness to state his opinions and his openness in admitting that they are opinions. While black-and-white photographs are scattered throughout, they are not well reproduced. Still, this genial introduction to major-league baseball will find many interested readers. --Carolyn Phelan
