Booklist Review

Although a pretty good introduction precedes them and a short, sweet afterword trails them, most of the pictures in this marvelous album are not remarked upon. They stand on their own merits, very securely. The photographers drawn to arguably the most photogenic state have been a stellar crew, and Therese Heyman, curator of the exhibition the book accompanies, has selected these photos as if her life depended on it. Far from all of these 114 pictures of the Golden State's natural and artificial splendors are straightforwardly realistic, as Heyman has chosen for stylistic variety. Whether naturalistic or surrealistic, single-plate or montaged image, each entry is a wow. Chronicle reproduces them, both in full color and a range of monochromes, according to its usual high standards. One of the year's most gratifying photo books. Checklist, selected bibliography; index of artists. --Ray Olson
