Booklist Review

Are women still subject to the patriarchal images of romantic love? In pursuit of "true love," are they "swept off their feet" by thoughts of the "hero and the heroine," "Sleeping Beauty," "Tristan and Iseult"? Even the autonomous woman, who has gained a measure of economic and emotional independence from men, is haunted by the stigma of (gasp!) being "unfeminine." Men encourage and support these myths as part of their ego support systems, says Kreps. No woman, according to the author, should accept substitutes. "Genuine love" can only be found in a relationship between equal partners who are free to make their own choices and set their own goals. Though Kreps offers seemingly simple solutions to difficult problems, her journalistic, even breezy, writing certainly conceals some solid premises. Notes; bibliography. --Jane Jurgens
