Booklist Review

Allen's compendium demonstrates the colorful, creative possibilities of machine knitting. More than 200 stitches are showcased in chapters on tuck stitches, lace, partial knitting, jacquard/Fair Isle, cables, cut floats (cutting longer yarn strands), weaving, and braids and edgings. The myriad color photos tell the story practically by themselves. Punch cards/graphs, yarn-choice suggestions, stitch multiples (how many to complete the pattern), tension adjustments, and suggested variations accompany each illustrated sample. A treasury of machine knitting that belongs next to the likes of Matthews' Vogue Dictionary of Knitting Stitches [BKL S 1 85]. Index. --Barbara Jacobs
