Booklist Review

Ten once-famous actresses from the silent-film era recount their lives, loves, and experiences as stars in the early days of the medium. Their names--Madge Bellamy, May McAvoy, Esther Ralston, Blanche Sweet--have been forgotten by almost everyone except film students and historians, and the celluloid manifestation of their work has by and large decomposed into dust in film storage vaults. Nevertheless, their stories are engagingly told and interesting to read. In each instance the stage is nicely set by the author, who provides background material and an overall tone that conveys respect, nostalgia, and poignancy. A serious and valuable work of oral history about a time that is nearly out of reach of living witnesses. Recommended for all film studies collections. Filmographies; index. --Steve Weingartner
