Summary

Summary

A splendid collection of 130 bandw photos. Abbott's first show, in 1926, comprised her portraits of literary and artistic figures. These stark, honest images open this work. They are followed by her NYC shots and the photos of science phenomena. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Booklist Review

Basically a paperback reprint of Horizon Press' definitive 1970 collection of Abbott's photographs, this edition is highly recommended for collections without the earlier one. It samples her portraits from Paris in the 1920s, the "Changing New York" project she made upon her return to the U.S. in the 1930s, and her 1950s scientific photography illustrating concepts in physics. Abbott, who is still living, was born in the last years of the nineteenth century and has been an important and prolific photographer. Although it would be a much greater pleasure to welcome a new collection of her work (there must be hundreds of interesting, unpublished photographs; many were included in Hank O'Neal's Berenice Abbott [BKL Ja 1 83]), having this one--with its essays by Muriel Rukeyser and David Vestal, chronology and bibliography (both updated)--back in print is good news, anyway. ~--Gretchen Garner
