Booklist Review

Following the success of its anthology of poems on aging, When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple [BKL F 1 88], Papier-Mache Press has issued the first book by one of the most highly regarded authors in that collection. Elkind, who began writing in her sixties, here describes the difficulties and frustrations of age in a candid but uncomplaining way. Memory fails, friends and sisters die, the body shrinks and grows feeble. ``I am the last of winter,'' she says, ``my own skull / already shines white in the sun.'' For all the suffering, however, this is neither a painful nor difficult book to read, thanks to the poet's skillful use of imagistic narrative. The book's target audience is women of advancing years, but it will move any reader. MPM.
