Booklist Review

The habitats and habits of sea and coastal birds are the subject of Soper's latest book. Filled with 75 black-and-white drawings, 60 pages of color photographs, and maps, the book covers almost the entire world--North and South Atlantic, Caribbean, Pacific and Indian Oceans, Mediterranean, the inside passage from British Columbia to Alaska, and even through the Panama Canal. Albatross, auks, boobies, frigatebirds, gannets, petrels, puffins, and shearwaters are but a few of the magnificent birds discussed. While not exactly an identification manual, this book nonetheless provides a splendid invitation to the joy of watching birds at sea. But for birders who can't afford the price of a cruise ticket, this is almost like being there. Index. --George Cohen
