Summary

Summary

Jason's dad falls asleep everywhere ... except in his own bed.All night long, Jason gets woken up by strange noises that lead him to find his dad in the most unexpected places--from on top of the refrigerator to the freezing cold woods outside his house. In order to finally get a good night's sleep, Jason musters up all of his resources and comes up with a most unexpected solution--tying his dad's toe to the bathroom doorknob to keep him in place.

Author Notes

Robert Munsch was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 11, 1945. He received an undergraduate degree in history and a master's degree in anthropology. While studying to be a Jesuit priest, he worked part-time at an orphanage. He decided he liked working with children and left the Jesuits after 7 years to work in a daycare center. He studied for a year at the Elliot Pearson School of Child Studies at Tufts University. He ended up at a lab preschool at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario and eventually became a Canadian citizen.

While working at a daycare center and telling stories to children, he realized that storytelling was what he loved to do and eventually he started writing the stories down. His first published title was Mud Puddle. He has written over 50 books including Love You Forever, Mortimer, Angela's Airplane, Andrew's Loose Tooth, Stephanie's Ponytail, Moira's Birthday, and Put Me in a Book.

Booklist Review

Ages 4-8. Tired of defrosting his father after his nocturnal sleepwalks, Jason devises a remarkable solution. Witty illustrations heighten the improbable humor.

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 2 Jason is awakened by the sounds of his father's sleepwalking and finds him asleep on top of the refrigerator. After returning him to bed, he is later awakened to find father asleep in the bathtub and later on top of the car in the garage. The fourth time it is footprints in the snow that lead him to a stiff father who must be thawed in the bathtub. He then ties one end of a piece of rope to his father's toe and another to his bed to limit the walks. It is his mother who is awakened in the final picture to find Jason asleep on top of the refrigerator and father asleep midstep with a toe tied to a piece of rope. What starts off as a humorous idea is run into the ground with repetition in the text so that even the humor of the final picture is lost in the stupidity of the story. The humorous illustrations are large and colorful with a page of text facing each one, but the story rates a zero. Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y. (c) Copyright 2010.
