Booklist Review

Writing and editing with concern for the patient and out of many years' experience answering patients' questions, internist Link provides a wealth of information for those willing to participate in making health-care decisions. He gives solid advice on choosing a physician, selecting health insurance, what to consider when contemplating surgery and taking medications, and how to stay healthy through life-style modifications, immunizations, and regular checkups. He turns over to other professionals coverage of substance abuse, nutrition, and medical malpractice. Since nearly everyone is likely to be a patient at some time, Link's effort appeals to a universal audience. Highly recommended. References; to be indexed. --Karen Graves

Library Journal Review

What a good idea, and how well-intentioned Dr. Link is. What a shame the text is so wordy and pedestrian in places. With chapters on choosing a doctor and health insurance, on medical tests, drugs, and surgery, and with information on substance abuse, nutrition, staying healthy, and medical malpractice, the topics covered here are of vital concern for many people. But tighter organization and more editing would have been welcome. More general and more current references would be useful. Adequate, but not essential, especially if similar titles such as Bruce Hensel's Smart Medicine ( LJ 5/15/89) are already owned.-- Mary Chitty, Massachusetts Coll. of Pharmacy & Allied Health Sciences Lib., Boston (c) Copyright 2010.
