Booklist Review

Introducing his book with the thesis that reading aloud to children offers the best hope for restoring cultural literacy to the new generation, Russell presents stories from Greek and Roman mythology for two listening levels, ``Ages 5 and up'' and ``Ages 8 and up.'' The legends that follow are eminently worth reading aloud for the drama, wonder, and pithy directness of their telling, let alone their later usefulness in helping young people recognize common allusions to myths. For the younger group, the stories include ``Icarus and Daedalus,'' ``Echo and Narcissus,'' ``Pegasus, the Winged Horse,'' ``Pygmalion,'' and a dozen others. Older listeners will hear of the Trojan War, the return of Ulysses, and the wanderings of Aeneas. Parents and teachers with little background in classic mythology or ancient Greek will appreciate the precise pronunciation guide to each uncommon word or difficult name. Russell places the phonetic spelling both at the beginning of the story, in an annotated list, and within the story, in parentheses. He even notes the approximate reading time of each tale, averaging 10 to 15 minutes for each tale or episode. Teachers and parents who have used Russell's previous anthologies, Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children and More Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children will welcome this fine collection of tales.
