Booklist Review

However uneventful they are in other respects, our times are hospitable to popular culture, as this literary criticism of the Holy Ghost of the American detective trinity demonstrates. Unlike executives caught playing Pac-Man, Schopen has no need to convince his readers he is just out on a lark. Schopen--who could significantly reduce his recapitulation of plots his readers will already know--can cut to the chase by analyzing stylistic decisions that permitted crossover novels like The Goodbye Look to accede to the front page of the New York Times Book Review without abandoning their roots in murder and illicit sex. What is more commendable, and less expected, than a local boy who makes good and remains a local boy? Recommended for large collections. --Roland Wulbert
