Booklist Review

This book contains a number of predictions about the public library in the form of scenarios. But first, Shuman discusses the reasons for attempting such prognostication, futurology, the tools of the futurist, and several interesting views about the library 20 to 30 years hence. Then, the little dramas: one, the "Death of the Library Scenario," foresees a future (1993!) where libraries are not affordable. Another,"AI: The Library as Robot," projects handling public service requests through artificial intelligence. Another explores library service provision directly into the home. There is even a scenario of the library after a nuclear war. All make fun reading and, however seriously any may be taken, provoke thought about the library's possibilities.
