Library Journal Review

Sports management consultant and baseball analyst Kelly rates the performance of Hall of Fame and active players. Rivaling the Bill James and Elias compilations, his work uses and explains his intricate rating system. Kelly tabs as outstanding Ruth, Gehringer, Gehrig, Berra, and Grove, prefers Cobb to Rose, and lauds Ted Williams. He is outspoken about home runs, base stealing, and baseball economics. Serious students will want to compare this with the more extensive Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract (LJ 1/86) , while just plain fans will enjoy reading it. For both adult and YA collections.-- Morey Berger, Monmouth Cty. Lib., Manalapan, N.J. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
