Booklist Review

This guide to the major gardens open to the public in the western half of the U.S. (including Hawaii) and Canada is a companion volume to The American Garden Guidebook East (Evans, 1988). The 240 listings cover 23 states and 4 Canadian provinces. The information on each garden includes type (botanical, conservatory, etc.), general features (displays, vistas, Japanese gardens, etc.), shops, tours, special activities or programs, hours open, wheelchair access, fees, and address. The last four chapters list family fun gardens (those offering displays and activities for children), free gardens, gardens that provide facilities for weddings, and gardens that have colorful displays during the winter months--Hawaii and California being the big winners here. This compact paperback is a must for nature lovers. No index. --George Cohen
